Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to introduce yet another groundbreaking digital initiative, this time targeting the transport sector, with the launch scheduled for Monday, February 19, in Accra.
Dubbed ‘Tap and Go’, this innovative solution entails a digital card preloaded with cash, enabling users to conveniently pay for transport fares by simply tapping the card on a fixed machine installed on the bus. This functionality draws parallels with the widely acclaimed Oyster Card system utilized in the United Kingdom.
The Ghanaian ‘Tap and Go’ card will offer additional versatility with both physical and virtual versions, ensuring ease of use for commuters. The virtual card option, accessible through the Tap and Go mobile app, allows users to make payments directly from their mobile phones if they prefer not to utilize the physical card.
This initiative, spearheaded by Vice President Bawumia, aligns with the government’s broader digitalization agenda aimed at formalizing the economy and fostering a cashless society.
The introduction of Tap and Go is poised to revolutionize the informal transport sector by implementing a well-structured and tested technology. This advancement promises substantial benefits for drivers, transport owners, and the general public alike.
State-owned transport services such as Metro Mass Transit and STC are anticipated to adopt the Tap and Go system, which will also be accessible to private transport operators, thus paving the way for enhanced efficiency and convenience across Ghana’s transportation network.
