Ghana’s Black Queens kicked off their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on a winning note after defeating tournament debutants Cape Verde 2-0 in their Group D opener.
An early strike from Doris Boaduwaa and a second-half own goal were enough to secure all three points for Ghana as they began their quest for a semi-final place and automatic qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup on a positive note.
The victory also ensured the Black Queens avoided a repeat of their disappointing start at the previous tournament, where they suffered defeat in their opening fixture.
Ghana wasted little time announcing their intentions, breaking the deadlock just six minutes into the game.
A perfectly weighted pass from Portia Boakye released Boaduwaa behind the Cape Verde defence, and the forward showed composure to slot home and give the Queens an early advantage.
The goal settled Ghana’s nerves after a cautious opening period, with both teams struggling to find rhythm in possession.
The Black Queens gradually took control of proceedings, enjoying more of the ball and creating the better chances, although they struggled to extend their lead before the break.
Boaduwaa remained a constant threat and came close to adding a second goal after another promising attacking move involving Alice Kusi, while Ghana also threatened from set-pieces.
Cape Verde, competing at WAFCON for the first time, had moments of pressure but failed to make their opportunities count, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan producing a composed display whenever called upon.
Ghana went into halftime with a narrow 1-0 advantage despite dominating large spells of the opening half.
After the restart, the Black Queens continued to push for a cushion and were eventually rewarded.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and before Boaduwaa could get the final touch, Cape Verde defender Eleia Vieira inadvertently turned the ball into her own net to double Ghana’s lead.
The second goal effectively sealed the contest as Ghana managed the remainder of the match to claim a comfortable opening victory.
The result temporarily sends the Black Queens to the top of Group D ahead of the remaining fixture between Mali and Cameroon.
Ghana will return to action on August 2, when they face Cameroon in their second group-stage match as they continue their pursuit of WAFCON glory and a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
