Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahddi Gilbrill, has described as unprecedented the simultaneous calls by both the NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) leadership, pointing to what he calls gross incompetence and lack of transparency by the commission.
Speaking on ABC News GH, Gilbrill stated, “For the first time in the history of Ghana, both parties are calling for the head of the Electoral Commission.”
His comments come after the EC announced a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 out of 37 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to Gilbrill, the crisis could have been avoided if the EC had heeded early warnings from the NDC.
“If the EC would have listened to us, the rerun would have been done a long time ago,” he said.
He also blamed the electoral body for failing to carry out its duties with transparency, stressing, “If the right things were done, I can assure that we wouldn’t have seen what is happening now.”
Meanwhile, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, has also condemned the EC’s directive, describing it as “unjust.”
He revealed that the party has filed an interlocutory injunction to stop the rerun, arguing that the EC’s decision was not based on consensus among stakeholders.
The rare convergence of criticism from both major political parties is casting a heavy shadow over the EC’s credibility, with mounting pressure on its leadership to respond decisively.
