The Ghana Premier League (GPL) is set to resume on Friday, March 7, 2025, following a three-week suspension due to security concerns, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
The break was necessitated by recent incidents of hooliganism, most notably the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Nana Pooley Frimpong, which prompted a reassessment of security measures at match venues.
In response to fan violence, the GFA has introduced the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025. This includes stricter stadium access controls, increased police presence and improved security coordination between clubs and law enforcement.
The measures are designed to protect players, match officials, and fans, fostering a safer matchday experience across the country.
According to the GFA, the league’s restart is dependent on final security inspections at various stadiums, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

“The league’s return is subject to the safety and security assurance inspection of all venues currently being undertaken by the GFA and the Ministry for Sports and Recreation,” the FA stated.
This process aims to ensure that all stadiums meet safety requirements before hosting matches again.
Asante Kotoko, whose supporter’s death led to the initial league suspension, has confirmed their readiness to resume competitive action on March 6, 2025. The club had earlier demanded stronger security measures before returning to play.
With the league’s resumption, the GFA has announced new fixture dates:
Matchday 20 – March 18-20, 2025
Matchday 21 – April 1-3, 2025
Matchday 22 – April 15-17, 2025
Additionally, the postponed MTN FA Cup Round of 16 clash between Asante Kotoko and Sekondi Eleven Wise has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
The return of the Ghana Premier League is expected to reignite excitement among fans, with stakeholders hopeful that the new security measures will prevent further disruptions.
