The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a British woman at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) after she attempted to smuggle cannabis on board British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to Gatwick.
NACOC officials say the suspect’s suitcase contained 32 slabs of substances suspected to be cannabis, which later tested positive with a total weight of 17.72 kilograms.
She was immediately processed and handed over to the Commission’s headquarters for further investigations.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of a major drug bust on May 18 involving another British national who arrived from Thailand via Dubai with 53.6 kilograms of cannabis in two suitcases.
That operation also led to the arrest of a customs officer and a CIP section airport porter suspected to have assisted in the smuggling attempt.
NACOC says the back-to-back arrests highlight “increased vigilance and collaboration” between security agencies to clamp down on drug trafficking through Ghana’s main international airport.
