The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has dismissed circulating rumors that its newly elected presidential candidate, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah, has selected renowned broadcast journalist, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, as her running mate for the 2024 elections.
The speculation, which gained traction on social media following her election on September 4, 2024, has been described by the party as unfounded.
Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah firmly denied the claims, urging Ghanaians to disregard such reports.
“I want to make it clear that no decision has been made regarding my running mate. These are just rumors, and I will announce my running mate at the appropriate time,” she stated.
The CPP flagbearer emphasized that the party’s focus is on rallying support for the upcoming elections rather than entertaining baseless speculations.
The rumors surfaced shortly after Kumankumah’s decisive victory in the CPP’s National Congress, where she garnered 763 votes, defeating her opponent, Nana Yaw Anokye Frimpong, who polled 586 votes. Out of 1,360 total votes cast, 11 were rejected.
Following her win, Kumankumah stressed the need for party unity, urging supporters to stand together to ensure success in the 2024 elections.
“This victory represents the will of the people, and we must now work together to achieve our common goal,” she remarked.
While the CPP works to rebuild its standing in Ghanaian politics, the association of Captain Smart with the party has raised eyebrows, with some questioning his political credentials.
Captain Smart, known for his vocal and often controversial views, has become a prominent figure on social media, but his potential entry into politics has sparked skepticism.
