The case of nearly 3 million missing male condoms has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
In August 2022, 20,000 packs of condoms, totaling 2,880,000 pieces, along with 120,000 vials of the birth control shot Depo-Provera, valued at 1.336 million, were issued to a driver named Joe Ghartin for delivery to the regional medical store in the Eastern Region.
According to the Attorney General’s report released in July 2024, the items were never delivered and remain unaccounted for.
This development resurfaced during a public hearing of the Ministry of Health, facilitated by the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
The Ministry of Health represented by Mrs Emma Ofori Agyemang, Director of PPME commented on the case, stating that it was initially reported to the Eastern Regional Police Command.
However, as time passed and no progress was made, the decision was made to refer the case to the CID Headquarters for further investigation due to the gravity of the situation.
“After some time, when we realized there were some delays, then as the issue delayed, we asked that the issue be referred to the CID Headquarters due to the nature of it. So currently that is where it is,” Ofori Agyemang explained.
The investigation is ongoing, and the public eagerly awaits further updates on the whereabouts of the missing medical supplies.
