The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced the dismissal of Chris Hughton from his position as head coach of the Black Stars. This decision comes after Ghana’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament.
The entire technical team has also been dissolved in the aftermath of Ghana’s disappointing performance in the AFCON. Chris Hughton, appointed early last year, was tasked with rejuvenating the team following a lackluster World Cup campaign in Qatar. Unfortunately, under his management, the Black Stars were unable to progress beyond the first round of the AFCON.
During the tournament, Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, managed a draw with Egypt, and experienced a dramatic turn of events in a must-win game against Mozambique. The team relinquished a two-goal lead in the last three minutes of added time, leading to their elimination from the competition.
The decision to relieve Chris Hughton of his coaching duties reflects the GFA’s commitment to reevaluating the team’s direction and implementing changes to enhance performance in future competitions. The search for a new head coach and technical team is expected to be a key focus as Ghana looks to regroup and build for future challenges.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect.
The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
The Ghana Football Association will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars.”
