President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the construction of a new airport at Nsoatre in the Bono Region, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation infrastructure and improving regional connectivity.

The project, unveiled as part of his ongoing “Resetting Ghana Tour,” is expected to replace the current Sunyani Airport, which has long faced operational limitations due to its relatively short runway.

According to the President, the existing 1.5-kilometre runway is not suitable for larger aircraft, and expansion of the current facility is no longer feasible due to surrounding developments. He explained that these challenges necessitated the identification of a new site for a modern airport.

With the support of traditional leaders, the government has secured land at Nsoatre for the development of a more advanced aviation facility. The new airport will feature a 2.4-kilometre runway, allowing it to accommodate bigger aircraft and improve flight operations in the region.

President Mahama noted that the project is part of a broader strategy to upgrade transport infrastructure across the country, enhance economic activity, and position the Bono Region as an important hub for trade and investment.

The construction of the new airport is expected to significantly boost accessibility to the region, supporting both commercial and economic growth while easing travel for residents and businesses alike.
