The Circuit Court in Accra has convicted eight individuals for assaulting former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and two others during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run at the Methodist Church Polling Station on July 11, 2025.
The convicts, who also attacked the Deputy Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, and trader Majeed Mohammed Saana, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to assault and three counts of assault.
They include Jijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, Ali Saeed, and Al Mohammed Abubakar.
The case, presided over by Judge Isaac Addo, saw the convicts admitting guilt on their own plea. Sentencing has been deferred to Friday, August 29, 2025, while the accused persons have been granted bail of GH¢80,000 each with one surety.
Prosecutor Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer recounted that on June 11, 2025, the complainants, all members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were on their routine visit to polling centres when they were attacked.
He explained that after security rescued Hawa Koomson and Majeed Saana, the accused persons further assaulted Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei without provocation.
According to the prosecution, the victims were later taken to the Odorkor Police Station and the Regional CID, where they lodged formal complaints and were issued medical forms for treatment.
The accused persons were subsequently arrested but denied the allegations in their caution statements. “After investigations, they were charged with the offences and arranged before this honourable court,” Chief Inspector Lawer told the court.
