Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has issued a stern warning to players in Ghana’s road sector, declaring an end to the era of indiscriminate contract awards without oversight or funding.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister criticised past practices where road contracts were awarded haphazardly, often without the necessary financial backing or transparent processes.
According to Mr. Agbodza, his ministry has been overwhelmed with unsolicited contract proposals, many of which lacked proper documentation or feasibility.
He emphasized that going forward, only contractors who can demonstrate technical and financial competence will be considered. Any contractor whose road works fail without a legitimate cause will face consequences, including the revocation of their performance bond.
This shift aligns with the government’s broader reform agenda to restore discipline and value-for-money principles in public procurement.
The move also complements recent announcements on major infrastructure projects, including the forthcoming Accra-Kumasi expressway, which is expected to follow strict design, costing, and accountability protocols.
Mr. Agbodza’s posture signals a break from the past and a push for professionalism and responsibility in the road sector.
