The Circuit Court has granted bail to 19 more anti-galamsey protesters, setting the bail amount at GH₵20,000 with one surety. Among those released is renowned activist Raphael Williams, who has been at the forefront of the fight against illegal mining.
The group includes individuals like Razak Suleman, Gerald Delim, Comrade Abubakar Sadeeq, and several others who have passionately rallied for environmental justice.
Their release brings a glimmer of hope amidst ongoing tensions surrounding the fight against galamsey, which has sparked nationwide protests.
However, the situation remains tense as Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convenor of the anti-galamsey protests, was denied bail once again, marking the third refusal since his arrest during the demonstration two weeks ago.
His bail request faced strong opposition from the Attorney General’s Department, reflecting the ongoing struggles within the movement.
Earlier refusals from both the Accra High Court and the Circuit Court raise concerns about the treatment of activists fighting for the environment and the future of their communities.
In a heartening development, another detainee, Fanny Otoo, who has been ill since the arrest, was granted bail with two sureties.
This raises hopes for the other detainees as they await their day in court.
The case has been adjourned to October 14, 2024, as the battle continues for justice and the rights of those standing against the detrimental effects of illegal mining in the country.
