President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has distanced himself from the jailing of anti-galamsey activists, stating that the courts, not his office, are responsible for such decisions.
Addressing concerns in an interview with France 24, the president clarified that Ghana’s judiciary operates independently, and any legal action taken against protesters falls within their purview.
“I’m not responsible for jailing people in Ghana. The courts in Ghana are independent institutions,” Akufo-Addo emphasized, defending the protesters’ right to demonstrate, which he affirmed is in line with the constitution.
His remarks come amid growing criticism of the government’s handling of environmental activists fighting against illegal mining practices.
