A 50-year-old woman, Grace Asantewaa, has been charged by the Ghana Police Service for exposing a child to danger after attending a Democracy Hub street protest with a 12-year-old girl.
The police clarified details following reports of her arrest, correcting misinformation that initially claimed the woman was 68 years old. Both Asantewaa and the child were taken into custody but released on police enquiry bail shortly after.
In a statement released by the police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi denied earlier reports suggesting that a 12-year-old child, a 68-year-old woman, and a pregnant woman had all been detained.
The police explained that Asantewaa had not been separated from the child at the time of the arrest, in order to prevent distress.
At the station, the child was provided with food, and Asantewaa was promptly granted bail to return home with her.
The Ghana Police Service has charged Asantewaa under section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), accusing her of exposing the child to danger by bringing her to the protest.
