The Catholic Church in Ghana is urging traditional leaders to take a decisive role in combating illegal mining.
Speaking on ABC IN THE MORNING, Most Rev. Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, emphasized that any chief found promoting illegal mining activities must face destoolment.
He believes that such action would act as a powerful deterrent to other chiefs who may be involved in these detrimental practices, calling for collective responsibility in protecting the nation’s resources.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference is committed to mobilizing support against illegal mining, with plans to present a comprehensive proposal aimed at uniting Ghanaians in this critical fight.
To kick off their initiative, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra will hold a prayer walk on Friday, October 11, 2024, demonstrating their resolve and dedication to the cause.
Following the walk, they will submit a petition to the president, urging stronger measures to clamp down on the escalating Galamsey activities threatening Ghana’s environment and future.
