The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, has made a passionate plea to political leaders to refrain from politicizing matters concerning education and instead focus on improving the welfare of Ghanaian students.
Addressing the second edition of the NUGS Education Conference in Accra, Kyeremeh emphasized the potential repercussions of politicizing education, noting that students would ultimately bear the brunt of any adverse effects resulting from flawed policies in the sector.
As the 2024 election approaches, Kyeremeh urged political leaders to approach discussions about the education system without the typical political posturing that often hinders progress. He stressed the importance of including youth perspectives in policy formulation and decision-making processes, advocating for the establishment of a Youth Advisory Board to ensure that student leaders are actively involved in shaping educational policies.
In addition, Kyeremeh called on the Ministry of Education to fully utilize the funds allocated through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for implementing projects. He highlighted the inadequacy of funds released by GETFund to schools, emphasizing that unlocking the full allocation would enable significant transformation across campuses nationwide.
“Most of the notable senior high schools have been able to carry out massive infrastructural and developmental projects on their campuses because they got support from the GETFund, and we believe many others can have the same story to share when the full amount allocated to the GETFund is released to schools for project implementation,” Mr. Kyeremeh added.
Kyeremeh commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, for his dedication to advancing education in the country. Dr. Adutwum, speaking at the conference, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in the educational system, underscoring the importance of continued support for educational development.
