Former President John Dramani Mahama has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election by the Electoral Commission (EC), securing a decisive victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid ballots cast.
His main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, accounting for 41.61%.
The announcement solidifies Mahama’s return to the presidency and strengthens the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) influence, with the party winning a majority in Parliament, including over 160 confirmed seats.
This election witnessed a voter turnout of 60.9%, with the process deemed largely peaceful despite isolated incidents of violence and logistical setbacks in areas such as Damongo, Ablekuma Central, and Okaikwei North.
Dr. Bawumia, in a gracious concession speech, acknowledged Mahama’s victory and urged his supporters to embrace the results.
“The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” Bawumia stated, calling for unity and calm as the nation transitions.
Mahama, who previously served as President from 2012 to 2016, is expected to address the nation to outline his vision for his second term ahead of his swearing-in on January 7, 2025.
His return, predicted by major polling organizations, marks a significant political shift in Ghana’s leadership.
International observers have praised the EC for its transparency, further bolstering the credibility of Mahama’s victory as he prepares to lead the country through the next four years with a strengthened parliamentary majority.
