An Agona Swedru Magistrate Court has issued an injunction against Cynthia Morrison, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, preventing her from running as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.
The court’s order, issued two months before the election, prohibits Morrison from holding herself out as an independent candidate or taking any further steps in the nomination process.
This injunction is in place until an ongoing legal case involving the incumbent MP is resolved.
Morrison’s decision to contest as an independent came after she claimed she was unfairly treated during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.
According to the MP, the party’s leadership schemed against her, despite her notable contributions to the party and the constituency.
“The party has not been fair to me, and I cannot sit back and watch the development of Agona West stagnate,” Morrison remarked, explaining her motivation for breaking away from the party that had brought her to power in 2016 and 2020.
The incumbent MP lost the NPP primary with 152 votes, while Christopher Arthur secured the nomination with 240 votes.
