The National Executive Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially thrown its weight behind Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
This endorsement follows John Mahama’s submission of his choice for running mate last week, with the party now firmly endorsing his selection for the forthcoming election.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang is set to embark on her second consecutive term as the running mate, having previously served in the same capacity during the 2020 election.
Amid speculations surrounding other potential candidates like Julius Debrah, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Mahama; economist Dr. Nii Moi Thompson; Member of Parliament for Asunafo, Eric Opoku; and retired Police Commissioner, Nathan Kofi Boakye, Mr. Mahama has opted to retain the former Education Minister.
The formal presentation of the nomination for the running mate was made by the NDC leader to the party’s Council of Elders on February 27, 2024.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party’s General Secretary, expressed full confidence in the selected running mate, anticipating that her extensive experience, expertise, and dedication will greatly contribute to the campaign, aligning with John Mahama’s vision to “Build Ghana We Want Together.”
Kwetey extended gratitude to the party’s supporters for their steadfast loyalty and commitment, emphasizing the collective endeavor towards a brighter future for Ghana under the NDC’s leadership.
