The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive to conduct a rerun at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.
The directive, announced on Saturday, December 28, has sparked significant controversy, with the NDC insisting that their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, has already secured a decisive victory in the constituency.
The EC’s call for a rerun stems from the absence of a pink sheet, an official document summarizing results, from the disputed polling station. Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, explained that of the 367 polling station results collated, three were initially outstanding.
Among them, one result was rejected due to procedural irregularities.
“The commission rejected one outrightly on the stance that it was declared on a wrong statement of poll because they used training sheets,” Dr. Quaicoe noted.
However, the NDC is adamant that the issue does not warrant a rerun.
Rashid Tanko Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the party, criticized the EC’s decision, stating, “Our candidate leads by 1,154 votes, and even if the entire voter population of 689 in the disputed station were included, the margin would remain decisive. Elikplim Akurugu has won this election, and we will not accept this so-called rerun.”
He also accused the EC of mismanaging the situation with errors in calculations, reiterating that the party considers the election result settled.
