The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has called for a renewed focus on military discipline, describing it as essential to addressing emerging and complex security threats facing Ghana.

Speaking at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on Monday, March 23, Lt. Gen. Agyapong emphasised that strict adherence to military standards, respect for hierarchy, and strong regimentation remain the backbone of a professional and effective armed force.

He cautioned that the evolving global and regional security environment presents increasingly sophisticated challenges, including hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and transnational organised crime. According to him, the Ghana Armed Forces must remain agile and disciplined to effectively respond to these threats.

“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined, and forward-looking in order to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” he said.

The four-day retreat, scheduled from March 23 to 26, is being held in two phases at Burma Camp in Accra and Mampong-Akuapem. It is aimed at repositioning the Armed Forces through a renewed emphasis on regimentation, with the goal of strengthening resilience, unity, and operational readiness.

Lt. Gen. Agyapong also highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, noting that joint planning and unified efforts are critical to achieving mission success. He further stressed the importance of deepening cooperation between the military and other state institutions to ensure a more coordinated national security framework.

In addition, he encouraged officers to embrace innovation and evolving technologies, pointing out that adaptability will be crucial in dealing with future threats. He also reaffirmed the military’s role beyond security, citing its contributions to national development through logistics, engineering, and civil-military engagements.
