Executive director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwaa has commended Parliament for passing the Environmental Protection Bill but emphasized that Ghana’s environmental challenges stem more from the lack of enforcement than the absence of laws.
Speaking on ABC News GH following the bill’s passage, she noted that while the legal framework to protect the environment has expanded significantly over the years, implementation remains a persistent issue.
The Environmental Protection Bill includes provisions for stricter regulations on industrial emissions, waste management, and deforestation.
It also outlines measures to promote renewable energy sources and encourage eco-friendly practices among businesses and individuals.
Her comment follows the 8th Parliament passing the Environmental Protection Bill on Thursday, January 2, 2024.
This legislation aims to address pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable development across the nation.
The bill, which had been under discussion for several months, received overwhelming support from both sides of the political spectrum.
