Legal counsel to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Executive Officer of the National Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, has defended the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning, Amaliba maintained that EOCO acted within the law and that the arrest should not be perceived as unusual. “Just as an ordinary thief will be arrested,” he stated plainly, “no one is above the law.”
Amaliba further explained that it is common for different state institutions to look into various aspects of a matter, and as such, Chairman Wontumi’s appearance before multiple investigative bodies should not raise alarm.
“Your action has implications for the institution of state to be interested in you,” he said, stressing that EOCO’s interest in the case was warranted and legitimate. He rejected claims of political targeting, warning that attempts to politicize such legal processes undermine the country’s democratic principles.
“Nothing has gone wrong,” Amaliba affirmed, reiterating that EOCO must be allowed to carry out its constitutional mandate without interference.
He called for calm and urged political actors to refrain from using partisan lenses when interpreting lawful actions by independent state agencies.
His comments come amid a wave surrounding Wontumi’s arrest, which some NPP sympathizers have decried as politically motivated.
