Nana Kwame Agyei, Research and Elections Officer for the Agona West branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has defended the party’s decision to expel Cynthia Morrison, a former Gender Minister, and 279 other members.
He emphasized that the expulsion was a necessary step to restore discipline and rebuild the party’s foundations for future electoral success
Speaking on ABC Prime News on Monday, Agyei explained, “These individuals have consistently violated the party’s constitution, showing no support for duly elected candidates during the 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections. Despite efforts to engage them and ensure they acted responsibly, the situation only worsened.”
The expulsion was carried out in accordance with Articles 3, 8, and 9 of the NPP’s 2017 constitution.
“Politics is about numbers, but it is also about loyalty and discipline,” Agyei noted.
“These individuals chose to support an independent candidate, Hon. Cynthia Morrison, in the 2024 election, directly opposing the party’s elected candidate. Our constitution makes it clear—such actions automatically forfeit membership.”
He stressed that the decision was not taken lightly. The deliberations involved founding members, former constituency executives, council of elders, patrons, and the disciplinary committee.
“We weighed the pros and cons, and this decision will bring the sanity and discipline needed for the party’s growth. It is in the best interest of the NPP as we rebuild toward subsequent elections,” Agyei concluded.
