Medical Physicist and President of the National Association of Allied Health Professionals, Dr Shiraz Issahaku, has urged Ghanaians to seek justice for the students who allegedly consumed the expired rice.
Speaking on ABC IN THE MORING on Monday, November 18, 2024, he said the consumption of rice poses a high health risk to young students due to its long-lasting effect, hence the Ministry of Education should be cautious in preparations especially ones that have to do with food for the students.
“It is extremely important that we ensure that we don’t put in foods that will be very difficult for our system to ride off.”
“So before foods are saved for especially the younger ones, it needs to be properly examined,” he said.
He calls for legal action against the Ministry of Education and any other body found complicit in this saga to bring justice to the students who consumed this rice.
“What beats my imagination is as to how anyone can repackage expired foods, and distribute to younger folks is what everyone has to ensure they get justice for the children,” he added.
Also, the spokesperson for the National Suppliers Association, Kweku Amedume says the persons involved in the distribution of foodstuff to the various senior high schools under free SHS have jeopardized the students who have consumed the expired food.
His comments follow allegations of about 22,000 bags of expired rice that have been distributed to the senior high schools.
He adds that it is their responsibility to ensure that foods given to the students are safe and wholesome for consumption before they get to the consumers but their failure to do so has health implications on the students. He spoke on ABC IN THE MORNING.
