The United States national team has been handed a significant boost ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter with Belgium, after FIFA ruled that forward Folarin Balogun will be available for selection despite his recent red card.
The 25-year-old was sent off during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 following a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic. Under normal circumstances, the straight red card would have triggered an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of the next fixture.
However, world football’s governing body intervened by suspending the enforcement of the ban under a probationary measure, effectively allowing the striker to feature in the upcoming knockout match.
In an official clarification, FIFA stated:
“In line with article 27 of the Fifa disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.”
The statement further outlined the conditions attached to the ruling:
“If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”
The decision has generated widespread debate across the tournament. Inside the United States camp, the news was met with relief, with players reportedly learning of the development during transit to a training session. Forward Christian Pulisic described the squad’s reaction, saying:
“Just a big smile on his face and all of ours. The foul wasn’t what it was, it was harsh.”
The ruling has also drawn political attention in the United States, with President Donald Trump praising FIFA president Gianni Infantino over the decision. Posting on Truth Social, he wrote:
“Thank you to Fifa for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
While the USA camp welcomed the development, Belgium’s football authorities have reacted with strong dissatisfaction. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) questioned the consistency of FIFA’s disciplinary process, noting that all other red cards at the tournament had led to automatic suspensions.
The RBFA expressed its frustration in a strongly worded response, stating:
“In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this Fifa World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options.”
With tensions now rising off the pitch, the decision has added a new layer of controversy to an already high-stakes Round of 16 clash between the United States and Belgium, as attention shifts from the pitch to FIFA’s disciplinary consistency.
