The Ga Traditional Council has announced ban on all forms of noisemaking in the Ga State from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, June 4, 2026, in preparation for this year’s Homowo Festival.
The announcement was made by Nii Ayikoi Otoo, President of the Ga-Dangme Council and former Attorney-General, during a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, March 26. The directive seeks to preserve the peace, solemnity, and spiritual reflection central to the festival.
Under the ban, activities such as the use of microphones, clapping, tambourines, and other musical instruments during worship are prohibited. Religious organizations have been instructed to confine their activities within church or mosque premises, while loudspeakers, megaphones, and roadside evangelism are also banned throughout the period.
The directive applies specifically to the Ga State, though traditional areas including Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Kpone are expected to announce their own timelines for similar restrictions following May 4.
A joint task force, comprising the Regional Security Council and the Ghana Police Service, has been tasked with enforcing the ban and prosecuting any violations.
The Council emphasized that compliance with the ban is not only a legal requirement but also a cultural duty, as the practice is protected under the 1992 Constitution as part of Ghana’s recognized cultural heritage. Residents and visitors are therefore urged to respect the tradition and contribute to a peaceful and meaningful Homowo celebration.
