The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have deployed military personnel to several flood-affected communities in Accra as part of emergency response efforts following days of heavy rainfall that have left parts of the capital submerged.
The intervention, codenamed Operation Boafo, is being led by the 48 Engineer Regiment and is aimed at supporting rescue operations, assisting stranded residents, and helping to reduce risks to lives in severely affected areas.
According to the Commanding Officer of the 48 Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Osei Amponsah, the operation has been activated in response to the rising impact of the floods across the city. He explained that personnel have been positioned at key flood-prone locations to ensure rapid response to distress calls.
He listed areas such as Klagon, Tse Addo, Dzowulu, and adjoining communities among those currently receiving attention due to their vulnerability to flooding.
Lieutenant Colonel Amponsah indicated that teams on the ground have already carried out multiple rescue operations, successfully evacuating residents who were trapped in their homes as floodwaters rose.
He further noted that although some areas continue to experience high water levels, no fatalities had been recorded at the time of reporting. He assured that monitoring efforts are ongoing as emergency teams continue coordinated operations across affected zones.
