A member of the convenors of the Fixthecountry movement, Kirchuff Atengble, has described their protest against illegal mining as successful despite the challenges they faced.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Tuesday, he said the turnout was encouraging even though there was little time to mobilise supporters.
“We did not have enough time to mobilize,” Atengble explained, adding that the protest had been announced only two weeks earlier following what the group saw as government’s lack of seriousness in tackling the galamsey menace.
He noted that, while resources were limited, the convenors were determined to go ahead to make their voices heard.
The demonstration, spearheaded by the Democracy Hub, culminated in the presentation of a petition to the President of Ghana. Organisers said the action was meant to demand immediate government intervention to curb the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
