The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah has urged government to act decisively against galamsey operators whose activities continue to destroy water bodies and threaten public health.
She expressed confidence that the president will put the interest of the majority of Ghanaians first and not bow to the influence of a few who are financing political parties through illegal mining.
“I am confident that the president will have the interest of the majority of Ghanaians at heart and not just the criminals who are destroying our environment for their private gains and maybe financing their parties. We need to think more of the 30 million Ghanaians,” she stressed.
She described the current state of affairs as catastrophic, warning that the nation is being poisoned by polluted water bodies.
According to her, the situation calls for urgent military intervention.
“Use all the forces at your disposal. The Blue water and green can assist but the navy has the expertise. What are we waiting for? Are we waiting for us to lose 100% of our water bodies before decisive action is taken?” she asked.
Awula Serwaa however noted that she remains hopeful the president will declare a state of emergency and take concrete steps, including the revocation of LI 2462.
She also commended the media for its relentless efforts in pushing galamsey issues to the fore, contributing to the calls for decisive reforms and the safeguarding of Ghana’s water bodies.
She further revealed that there is going to be an expose. “I know that there is a video on the 21 of September and a march the day after. what we are confident about is that the President will have the interest of the majority of Ghanaians at heart and not just the criminals who are making monies at the spends of Ghanaians.”
