The Controller and Accountant-General have received a request to instruct certain employees of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to repay allowances that were erroneously paid to them.
In a letter to the Controller and Accountant-General, the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ing. Ben Arthur, stressed that the staff members who received GH¢2,084,020 in allowances were not eligible for them.
According to FWSC, the affected staff have received a total of GH¢2,084,020 allowances within a year which they weren’t supposed to have received.
This discovery was made during the FWSC’s Nationwide Payroll Monitoring Exercise, which was initiated by the Commission.
The report states that some employees below the rank of director were found to have received allowances such as rent, domestic servant cleaner, housing, entertainment, and utility, which goes against the guidelines outlined in Category 4 Allowances.
The Chief Executive stated that these allowances should be removed from the payroll.
“As part of the payroll monitoring exercise, the FWSC has uncovered the fact that certain GBC staff members are currently receiving allowances that they are not entitled to. This practice must cease, and the allowances should be removed from the payroll,” he added.
