Political scientist at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to convene an emergency stakeholders’ meeting to address the growing tensions between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the declaration of the recollated parliamentary results.

Dr. Afriyie’s appeal comes in the wake of the NDC’s rejection of the seven re-collated parliamentary results, which saw the NPP win seven out of the nine disputed seats.

The NDC has contested the legitimacy of the results, alleging discrepancies and collusion between the EC and the NPP to undermine their legitimately won seats.

Speaking on ABC in the morning, Dr. Afriyie emphasized the urgency of resolving the standoff.

“It is crucial that all key stakeholders—political parties, civil society organizations, and the Electoral Commission—come together in an emergency consultation to discuss these differences and de-escalate tensions,” he said.

Dr. Afriyie stressed that an amicable resolution would not only uphold the integrity of the electoral process but also ensure peace and stability in the country during this critical period. “Failure to engage in dialogue and resolve these issues could lead to further mistrust and potential unrest,” he warned.

The call for an urgent meeting comes amid growing political uncertainty following the controversial re-collation of results.
