Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his dedication to tackling the issue of ghost names on the government’s payroll.
During a recent tour in Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West constituency, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the government’s payroll database is under continuous scrutiny to prevent unauthorized individuals from benefiting from government resources.
He expressed confidence that the Ghana Card is playing a pivotal role in this effort, as part of the government’s broader digitalization agenda to combat corruption.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the success of using the Ghana Card in identifying and removing ghost names from the payrolls of key government agencies.
“Through the Ghana Card, we’ve made significant strides in eliminating ghost names from government payrolls,” he stated.
He cited that in the first operation targeting the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), 29,000 ghost names were identified and removed, resulting in savings of 400,000 cedis.
Similarly, the National Service Scheme saw the removal of 44,000 ghost personnel, which led to substantial savings of over 300 million Ghana cedis.
Assuring the public of his commitment to a corruption-free payroll system, Dr. Bawumia noted, “The Controller and Accountant General has since removed all ghost names from the government payroll.
Today, we can confidently assert that the Ghana Card has helped eradicate ghost names from our government’s payroll.”
He reiterated that his administration will continue to work towards ensuring transparency and efficiency in government operations, emphasizing that the digitalization efforts will remain a key tool in curbing corruption.
