The Ghana Women’s Movement has announced a demonstration to demand justice, equality, dignity and the protection of the constitutional rights of Ghanaian women.

The demonstration, dubbed “Women’s Voices Matter,” is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, with participants expected to converge at Opera Square in Accra at 6:00am.

According to a press statement issued by the movement, the demonstration will bring together women from political parties, markets, salons, dressmaking shops, offices and homes, alongside male sympathisers.

The group said it is concerned about what it described as the increasing intimidation, arrests, remand and imprisonment of Ghanaian women in connection with the exercise of their freedom of expression.

“Women cannot remain silent while other women are arrested, detained and imprisoned for speaking their minds,” the statement said.

The movement said Ghanaian women have the right to express their opinions, participate in national affairs and speak on issues affecting their families, communities and the country.

It further stated that women should not be made to feel that expressing their views could result in intimidation, arrest or imprisonment.

As part of the demonstration, the Ghana Women’s Movement will present a petition to Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

The petition is expected to outline concerns and demands relating to dignity, equality, freedom of expression, women’s empowerment and equal treatment.

Among its key demands, the movement is calling for an end to what it describes as the intimidation and arrest of Ghanaian women.

It wants women to be free to speak, participate in politics, criticise the government and demand accountability.

“We will not be silenced,” the statement declared.

The group is also demanding the full implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, including measures aimed at increasing women’s representation and participation in decision-making.

“We do not want promises. We want implementation,” the movement said.

On the economic front, the movement is calling for greater access to capital, businesses, jobs and meaningful economic opportunities for Ghanaian women.

It said women need “empowerment,” “opportunities” and “economic freedom.”

The statement concluded with the declaration: “When women speak, Ghana must listen. When women rise, Ghana must listen. When women demand justice, Ghana must listen.”

The demonstration is being convened by Janet Asana Nabla, Chairperson of the PNP; Betty Akuffo Amoabeng, Chairperson and Leader of the NDP; Elizabeth Sam, Running Mate of the LGP; Akosua Asaa Manu, Advisor on Gender and Social Protection to the NPP Flagbearer; Grace Akosua Amoabeng, Spokesperson on the Gender and Social Protection Committee; as well as representatives of market women, hairdressers and dressmakers.
