The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has clarified that Ghana’s decision to accept West Africans deported from the United States is guided by humanitarian principles and Pan-African solidarity, not transactional motives.
He emphasized that the move reflects Ghana’s deep-rooted commitment to protecting lives, offering temporary refuge, and demonstrating regional responsibility.
According to Ablakwa, Ghana’s stance is grounded in empathy and in line with the country’s long-standing tradition of Pan-Africanism.
He maintained that the choice to receive the deportees goes beyond diplomacy and signals Ghana’s role as a credible and compassionate regional actor.
The Minister added that the policy ensures deported individuals are not left stateless or abandoned, stressing that it forms part of Ghana’s consistent efforts to strengthen unity among African nations while upholding humanitarian values.
