The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI), Mr. Emmanuel A. Cherry, has called for the empowerment of indigenous contractors through structured project contracting and stronger collaboration within the construction industry.

Speaking to the media on the need to promote sustainable infrastructure development and economic growth, Mr. Cherry noted that although some local contractors have the capacity to complete projects on time or ahead of schedule, many contractors continue to struggle with project delays.

According to him, such delays affect not only individual contractors but also the reputation and image of Ghana’s local construction industry.

Mr. Cherry therefore advocated increased subcontracting and collaboration among contractors, particularly in situations where a contractor lacks the capacity to execute an entire project alone.

He explained that contractors could partner with or subcontract specific components of projects to other capable companies, helping to improve efficiency and ensure projects are completed within the agreed timelines.

The GhCCI CEO further disclosed that the Chamber is working to realign its strategies with government policies, including the Big Push infrastructure programme and the 24-hour economy framework, to create greater opportunities for indigenous contractors.

He said key areas such as financial planning, safety and security requirements, and performance bonds must also be carefully considered in the execution of construction projects.

Mr. Cherry indicated that the Chamber will compile its observations and recommendations and present them to government as formal policy proposals aimed at strengthening the capacity of local contractors while ensuring that they meet the required standards.

He stressed that adopting best practices, promoting collaboration, and creating a structured contracting system would contribute to sustainable infrastructure development and broader economic growth.
