Two of Ghana’s most iconic football clubs, Asante Kotoko SC and Accra Hearts of Oak, have joined forces to tackle escalating security concerns in the Ghana Premier League.
In a landmark initiative, the clubs have drafted a position paper for submission to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), proposing measures to enhance safety and prevent future tragedies.
The collaboration comes in the wake of a tragic incident at Nana Kromansah Park during a league match between Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC, which led to the death of ‘Nana Pooley’, a devoted Kotoko supporter. The incident has galvanized both clubs to push for urgent reforms that ensure the safety of fans, players, and officials.

During a high-level meeting in Accra, Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) and members of the Hearts of Oak Board discussed strategies to prevent violence and improve security across league venues. Their recommendations, set to be presented to the GFA’s Executive Committee on February 6, 2025, include:
1.Strengthened security protocols to protect fans and participants during matches.
2.Collaborative engagement among clubs, government agencies, and law enforcement to address safety concerns.
3.Proactive measures to combat hooliganism and promote a safe, enjoyable atmosphere for all stakeholders.
The clubs expressed profound condolences to the family of deceased ‘Nana Pooley’, with Hearts of Oak pledging full support to Kotoko during this challenging time. Both clubs emphasized their determination to honour his memory by advocating for reforms that will prevent such incidents from recurring.
