The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the government to immediately arrest and interdict the National Security operatives involved in the assault and detention of JoyNews journalist Carlos Carlony.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Dwumfour said the government’s condemnation of the incident is not enough, insisting that swift and decisive action must follow.
The demand comes after Carlos Carlony revealed he was assaulted and forcefully detained by National Security operatives while covering a demolition exercise at a warehouse reportedly linked to businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.
Carlony said he was attacked from behind just as he was preparing to go on air, despite clearly identifying himself as a journalist.
He was later transported along with McDan and three others to the National Security Headquarters.
While the government, through Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the assault as “utterly unacceptable,” the GJA believes the response falls short.
The association has warned that without arrests and accountability, the attack could set a dangerous precedent.
Mr. Dwumfour announced that the GJA will formally address the media and public on Today, July 31, to outline its position on the increasing spate of attacks against journalists in Ghana.
