The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has ordered a re-run of the Ashanti Region Chairperson elections within 14 working days.
This follows a petition challenging the outcome of the June 30 polls, which the Committee reviewed alongside all evidence and testimonies from involved parties.
In a press release dated July 24, 2025, and signed by EDAC Chairman Zacharia Tanko Musah, the Committee stated that the decision aims to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.
The EDAC explained that the decision was based on “critical irregularities that took place prior to and during the elections,” including a failure to adhere to GJA constitutional provisions.
It cited the creation of a supplementary voter list on election day, with eligibility concerns surrounding some names on that list.
The Committee further revealed that a voter registered in the Greater Accra Region was allowed to vote in the Ashanti Region, a breach made significant by the one-vote margin of victory.
In view of these infractions, the EDAC concluded that a re-run was the most reasonable and fair resolution.
It directed that the Elections Committee publish a full list of eligible voters in the dailies and distribute copies to all contestants at least three working days before the polls.
The Committee also emphasized that “no supplementary list shall be created” and called on all members to take a keen interest in ensuring that the re-run is conducted with integrity.
A full report on the committee’s findings and recommendations will be submitted to the GJA secretariat.
