Three teacher unions have suspended their two-week industrial strike following a series of meetings with government representatives, the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) announced the decision on Friday, October 9, 2026, bringing temporary relief to affected schools.
GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah confirmed the suspension after a meeting with the FWSC, urging teachers to resume their duties.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he said.
The unions began the industrial action over unresolved concerns involving promotions, conditions of service and deprived-area allowances. Delays in settling promotion-related arrears were also among the key issues behind the strike.
Efforts to resolve the dispute intensified on Friday when the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment met with union representatives. The minister expressed optimism that the impasse would be resolved before the end of the day.
The Council of State subsequently held a closed-door meeting with the unions to discuss their grievances. Its chairman, Edward Doe Adjaho, described the engagement as highly fruitful.
The union leaders later met with the FWSC, where they formally announced the suspension of the industrial action.
The decision is expected to create room for further negotiations on the outstanding issues, although the unions have cautioned that the suspension does not mean their concerns have been fully resolved.
They warned that failure by the government to honour its commitments could lead to an immediate resumption of the strike.
