The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire outbreak at the Anloga Market, also known as Anwonadwom, at Afful Nkwanta in Kumasi, with no casualties reported.
The fire was reported at exactly 10:41 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026. The first fire appliance from the GNFS Regional Headquarters Substation arrived at the scene nine minutes later, at 10:50 p.m., to meet a fire that had already reached an advanced stage and engulfed a large section of the busy market.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain the blaze, bringing it under control at about 2:30 a.m. The fire was fully extinguished at 4:08 a.m.
Although no injuries or loss of life were recorded, the inferno caused extensive damage. More than 100 wooden and metal commercial structures, along with their contents, were completely destroyed.

According to GNFS, firefighting efforts were initially challenged by congestion within the market and the lack of proper segregation of wares, factors that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. However, swift reinforcement from the Manhyia and KNUST Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker, significantly strengthened the operation. The availability of a functional fire hydrant within the market also played a critical role in preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
The Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Peter Tetteh, his Deputy, and other senior officers were present at the scene, providing operational leadership and support throughout the emergency.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service.
