GNFS in talks to establish fire posts in market areas to prevent fire outbreaks

The Head of Public Relations for the Ghana National Fire Service, DO 11 Desmond Ackah, has announced that the service is in discussions with local authorities to establish fire posts in markets that currently lack them.

In an interview with ABC News GH, Mr. Ackah highlighted efforts to prevent the frequent fire outbreaks in market areas.

“In a long term, some of these markets that do not have market fire post, we will establish some,” he said.

“Government has promised to provide some rapid intervention vehicles that will be able to maneuver within the available space within the market to be able to respond to rapidly to any fire condition.”

He explained that talks with local authorities are focused on securing land to build fire service posts near these markets.

“Since the beginning of the year we have recorded a number of fire outbreaks across the country of which our markets have not been spared.”

“Even though we’ve been doing this over the years, we felt that it is only right to inform the public these bold steps that could go a long way to ensure that we are able to … fire outbreaks that are ravaging our markets.”

He also revealed that management is engaging market management to train their securities on fire related matters.

“What management has decided to do differently is to even get into these make-shape wooden structured markets to train their security at fire wardings, were they will be the first line of defense whenever there will be any fire,” he explained.

“Apart from that we’ve also formed market taskforce whose mandate is to go round and educate market folks at all times.”
