Ghanaian reggae legend and Grammy nominee Rocky Dawuni has dismissed criticisms over his acquisition of a diplomatic passport, urging detractors to direct their grievances at the government.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Dawuni noted that the development was unexpected and stressed that he neither lobbied nor campaigned for it. “There was no prior communication or lobbying.
They are all witnesses to our works and international travels. Based on your experience and frequent visits, they might provide it in benefit of the country,” he explained.
The award-winning artiste maintained that the recognition was a reflection of his years of promoting Ghana on the global stage through both music and diplomacy.
Responding to those questioning his worthiness, Dawuni said, “Those saying I don’t deserve it, that’s their business. If you have anything to say, go to the government with your disapproval. I am busy working and unconcerned with that.”
He pointed to his extensive global contributions, citing his role as a UN ambassador and his headlining performances at major concerts in Costa Rica and Brazil.
Dawuni also highlighted his involvement in international legislative processes, noting, “If you research about me, you’ll know I’m a UN ambassador. I was vetted for that after years of hard work. Is it a passport that is something special? Even a recording academy in Washington met in congress and I was invited for the legislation which has now become an American law. So, if the government wants to facilitate my works, I’m grateful for it.”
He clarified that the diplomatic passport does not make him political but instead equips him to represent Ghana effectively in international engagements.
