The Upper East Region has discovered gold deposits in seven out of its 15 districts, presenting new economic opportunities for the area.
This was disclosed by Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, during a discussion with journalists at the proposed site for the Bolgatanga Airport on March 29.
The minister highlighted the potential of the discovery to boost local businesses and attract investors. “This region has suddenly discovered mineral deposits. Out of the 15 district assemblies, about seven have these deposits, which presents a significant business opportunity,” he stated.
Atanga emphasized that the construction of the Bolgatanga Airport would play a crucial role in facilitating gold transportation, reducing reliance on road networks that are vulnerable to armed robbery.
He appealed to stakeholders for support in ensuring the project becomes a reality. “Once mining begins, there will be a need for quicker transport to move the gold to national markets without the risk of armed robberies. We need to accelerate efforts to improve infrastructure,” he said.
The minister also underscored the strategic importance of the airport beyond the mining industry, noting that Upper East serves as a gateway to neighboring Burkina Faso and Togo.
“Our airport will be a valuable asset,” Atanga remarked, stressing the need for urgent infrastructure development to position the region as a key player in the mining and trade sectors.
