Government Intervenes to Suspend Sachet Water Price Hike

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced that the planned increase in sachet water prices will not take effect as earlier scheduled, following engagements with industry stakeholders.

In a press release issued on Monday, April 6, the Ministry commended the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) for suspending the proposed price adjustment.

“The Ministry assures the public that the price of sachet water will not increase today. Consumers can continue to purchase sachet water at the current price,” the statement said.

Earlier, NASPAWAP had proposed a price review, citing a global shortage of polymers and rising production costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Iran. The association had suggested new prices, including GH¢8 at the ex-factory level and up to GH¢15 at retail.

However, the Ministry’s intervention reflects the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining market stability.

To address the concerns raised by producers, the Ministry has scheduled a meeting with the leadership of GPMA and NASPAWAP on Wednesday, April 8, to find a lasting solution to challenges facing the sector.

“The Ministry remains steadfast in working with all trade associations to resolve issues swiftly and maintain stability in the market,” the statement added.

The decision offers temporary relief to consumers as discussions continue on balancing production costs with the affordability of sachet water, a key source of drinking water for many households across the country.
