The government has agreed to two of the critical allowances demanded by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) — uniform and fuel — following a high-stakes meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health.
The agreement, reached after intense deliberations with government officials and GRNMA leadership, is expected to be reflected in the upcoming mid-year budget review scheduled for presentation to Parliament on Thursday.
The meeting, which included Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr. George Smith Graham, was described as constructive, with all parties agreeing to continued dialogue.
The Minister acknowledged the validity of the GRNMA’s concerns and emphasised the need for mutual respect.
The committee, chaired by MP for Nabdam, Naawane Kurt Mark, reaffirmed its neutrality and commitment to facilitating a resolution to the impasse over the 2024 Conditions of Service.
Despite the progress, the GRNMA expressed dissatisfaction with the broader government proposal, describing it as inadequate. GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, confirmed that members had been briefed on the meeting’s outcome, but clarified that the union’s strike remains suspended, not cancelled.
The FWSC is expected to begin further engagements with the association on Tuesday to address outstanding concerns, as both parties work toward a comprehensive agreement to improve the welfare and retention of nurses and midwives nationwide.
