The government has allocated GH¢1 billion from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) towards phasing out the double-track system in Senior High Schools (SHS) from next year, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced.
The amount, which will be captured in the 2026 annual funding budget to be presented to Parliament in November, is expected to expand existing infrastructure and complete stalled projects in schools nationwide to accommodate all students at a go.
Mr. Iddrisu disclosed this during the inauguration of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School in Accra on Thursday, September 11.
He stressed that the investment formed a central part of the President’s vision of enhancing the quality of SHS education.
He explained that the GH¢1 billion allocation would be used to complete classroom blocks, assembly halls, and other facilities that had delayed, while also deploying digital solutions to widen access to quality education.
“The funds would be used to complete stalled projects, including classroom blocks and assembly halls, to ensure all students can be accommodated in a single, unified system,” the Minister said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the Free SHS policy, stressing that it would not be discontinued.
“Free Senior High School has come to stay,” he added, assuring that further investments would focus on infrastructure development and improving literacy and numeracy across the country.
