Following the vetting of Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, concerns have arisen over his proposed economic policies.
Speaking on ABC News GH, Dr. Forson suggested that under a potential Mahama-led government, taxes like the betting tax and e-levy would be scrapped in the first budget, with revenue shortfalls addressed through expenditure cuts.
He however urged that making up of the tax cut is possible but, “whatever is done, we want to hear from them how that will be made up for.”
Dr. Gideon Boako, MP for Tano North, expressed doubts about replacing lost revenue solely through cuts, warning it could affect key public services.
Meanwhile, economist Patrick Asuming, speaking on ABC in the Morning, criticized the removal of road tolls as a “knee-jerk reaction.”
He argued the decision overlooked long-term revenue needs for infrastructure.
He called for the reinstatement and increase of road tolls to ensure sustainable funding for road maintenance and development, stressing that a stable income stream is crucial for the country’s growing infrastructure needs.
