The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has signaled the possibility of a rise in transport fares, with ongoing discussions between the union and the new Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe.
Speaking on ABC’s morning show, the PRO of GPRTU, Abbas Imoro, stated that price adjustments are under consideration, though a formal decision has not yet been made. He emphasized that the union follows a structured system to ensure that fare changes are fair and transparent.
“Currently, where we are, we will have to change the phase value of the lorry fare, but there is a system we use before coming out so that it might not sound as if someone is cheating the other,” Imoro explained.
“But we have our first choice, and if that materializes, it will hold the transport prices for a while.”
Imoro also expressed his support for the recent legalization of motorbikes for commercial use, following the directive from Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe. While optimistic about the expansion of the transport industry, he urged Okada riders to maintain order and discipline on the roads.
“Uber and co joined us, so if they’ve also been allowed to work commercially, they are welcome,” he said. “It is just that they have to do enough to work properly.”
