Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has backtracked on giving a deadline to fix non-functional streetlights in Accra. This follows her initial promise to fix the capital’s 70 per cent broken streetlights in the region within 50 days, which many bemoan was unmet.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Monday, the Minister insisted, “Streetlight is my project and I will make sure that this project will be achieved,” but admitted that she could no longer commit to a timeline.
“Some budgets are so huge, so we are working on it, but I can’t give any timeline,” she said.
The Minister had earlier reported progress during a March 25 press briefing, where she announced that 126 streetlights had been restored across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.
That update came exactly 50 days after assuming office, and she listed several key roads including the George Walker Bush Highway, Nima Highway, and Independence Avenue as having benefited.
However, she noted that the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road remained without lights due to ongoing construction.
Ocloo emphasized the need for patience, urging residents to “give us some time, and we will make sure that we will work on those places that are yet to be worked on.” She also raised concerns about cable theft, warning that it continues to derail progress and promising strict action.
“Anyone caught stealing these vital components will face severe consequences,” she stated, calling on local assemblies and residents to help protect public infrastructure.
